Burundi Ngozi Washed

Origin: Beduca Mill, Burundi
Process: Washed
Tasting Notes: Butterscotch, Lavender, Caramel, Mineral, Kick-Ass Coffee

Tucked beside the legendary growing region of Kayanza, Ngozi stands as one of the finest coffee-producing areas in Burundi. Surrounded by the lush expanse of Ruvubu National Forest, dotted with freshwater lakes, and positioned close enough to the capital for meaningful infrastructure and technological support, Ngozi offers an ideal balance of natural beauty and modern capability.

This offering is a macrolot—making it more accessible than the microlots we typically source—but don’t mistake accessibility for compromise. This is a truly solid, high-quality washed coffee with the clarity and structure Burundi is known for.

Processed at the Budeca mill in Gitega—the largest mill in the country—this coffee carries deep economic significance. Budeca employs roughly 3,000 people, accounting for nearly 10% of Gitega’s population. In a country where unemployment hovers around 50%, this mill is more than a processing center—it’s a cornerstone of the local economy.

For nearly two decades, Burundi’s coffee industry was overshadowed by civil war and instability. But Burundi is back. Coffee remains the country’s number one export and primary source of income—from growing and harvesting to processing, transport, and export. The resilience of this industry mirrors the resilience of its people.
